Stookey Township Highway Commissioner Responsibilities:
Administrative:
- Determine and prepare the budget
- Determine the Highway tax levy
- Determine needs and establishes bond issues
- Makes a monthly report to the County Engineer
- Makes the annual report to the Township Board
- Obtains necessary approval of the use of monies
- Determine the lease or purchase of equipment
- Maintains an inventory of all tools and equipment
- Contracts for liability insurance
Maintenance and Construction Work:
- Maintains and constructs roads and bridges
- Plows snow
- Removes obstructions from the road
- Maintains access roads constructed under Section 10-22.36A of the School Code (105 ILCS 5/10-22.36A) which connect school grounds with a rural road
- Maintains streets in approved subdivisions
- Checks on damage to roads and bridges
- Lays out or alters roads
- Maintains entrance culverts
- Maintains corner stones
- Cares for and maintains Highway tools and equipment
- Erects and maintains traffic signs after consultation with County Engineer
- Arranges for removal of trash, garbage, etc. along highways
Personnel:
- Hires employees
- Determines wages and fringe benefits for employees
- Reports workers’ compensation, when necessary
- Maintains a payroll record
- Maintains a time card and distribution system
- Checks on compliance of safety rules
Public Relations:
- Maintains good relations with residents of the Township
- Has good working arrangements with the Township Board
- Helps the news media
